A little bit of giving in the midst of madness

Every year, I find myself wanting to find meaning in the busyiness of this season, so this is my attempt at doing that. Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, I hope you'll consider joining me.

Today, at a luncheon hosted by the firm that handles our financial investments, I won a $50 Visa Gift Card door prize. My first thought: new jeans. My second thought: new boots. My third thought: maybe someone else could use the money.

As I drove home, I remembered an Oprah show I saw last week: she gave every member of her audience a $1000 and a video camera, and told them they had 1 week to find someone who needed that $1000, and report back with their video footage. The results were mind-blowing and several people (through the help of their communities) turned their $1000 into several $1000's (even $200,000!!!) in cash/donations and forever change the life of a needy individual/family.

And so, I thought, why couldn't I do the same kind of thing with my community?

So - here's what I'm going to do: Find someone in Whatcom County who needs the $50 more than I do, and add $50 of my own money, and see how this $100 can grow - and do it in one week.

Here's what I'm asking you:

1) Help me figure out who needs this money - maybe it's a single mom who is getting back on her feet; maybe it's a family struggling with a major illness; maybe it's someone who recently lost their job. If you know someone suitable, please tell me ASAP.
2) Make a donation - whether it be cash or food or whatever. As soon as I know who the recipient will be, I'll update this blog. I'll accept donations up to 9 pm next Wednesday December 20 with the intent of delivering the "donation" to the recipient on the morning of Thursday December 21.
3) Pass this on to anyone and everyone you know. Direct them to this blog I have posted and feel free to comment on here yourself! If you are going to donate - please post that in the blog!

Who knows what can happen but I'm excited to find out! I promise to keep you posted.

Thanks for listening,

Katharine Bothel

OK, so it is only 9 hours since I posted the original blog and I already have $200 in donations!!! So the original $100 is now $300, and several others have committed to donate. Thanks everyone! Keep giving me ideas on who to donate too!

Something to consider - if everyone I sent this to gave $10, we'd probably collect $1000 minimum - so it doesn't take much money individually, to create a lot of giving collectively.
